Yarning Circles create space for discernment at Synod 39
24 October 2026
At the 39th Queensland Uniting Church Synod in Session, Yarning Circles provide members with an opportunity to listen deeply, share perspectives and discern together as they consider proposals before the meeting.
The approach recognises that discernment is about more than debating ideas or reaching a decision. It is also about creating the conditions for people to hear one another, engage with different viewpoints and listen for the voice of God in the life of the Church.
Yarning Circles are designed to build relationships and establish a sense of trust among participants. Through careful, non-judgemental listening, members can explore the ideas and feelings behind different perspectives, clarify their own thinking and contribute to the conversation without relying on the approval of the group.
The process is grounded in four key principles: deep listening, empowerment, holding the space and focused conversations. Together, these principles encourage openness, respect and curiosity, particularly when members encounter conflicting ideas or differences of opinion.
The physical arrangement of a Yarning Circle also plays a role. By reducing barriers between participants, the space is intended to encourage people to speak openly, listen respectfully and build trust.
During Synod, Yarning Circles will help provide a foundation for the discernment of proposals before members move into the formal processes of deliberation and decision-making. Focused conversations will help participants engage with the issues at hand and identify the questions and perspectives that need to inform their consideration.
This approach reflects the Uniting Church’s understanding that the councils of the Church are places where members seek to hear the voice of God together. Yarning Circles create space for that listening to happen, recognising that discernment is a shared process shaped by relationships, careful reflection and the willingness to remain open to the perspectives of others.
