Moderator Medal Presentation - Helen Beech Image

Helen Beech, Living Faith Uniting Church, recently received a Moderator’s Medal which is awarded for outstanding contribution to the community (Helen is pictured with the Moderator, Rev Bruce Moore).

Helen has been the leader of the Balance Builders' program for over 20 years. As a physiotherapist she established an exercise group for 10 women, which grew exponentially over the years to around 50 women. Helen has never accepted payment with all donations going towards the running costs of the program. She has untiringly, enthusiastically, professionally, humbly and voluntarily dedicated every Friday morning to putting a spotlight on women's physical, mental and spiritual health as they approach older age.

The ladies in the program were able to build friendships and have support of other women, many of them widows and living alone. The much-loved weekly program provided the opportunity for them to socialise while maintaining their health. Helen has worked tirelessly to help older people prevent injuries or osteoporosis as they age through exercise techniques, and has given advice on diet, and spent time showing individuals exercises to rehabilitate after injuries.

She gently and sensitively shared a Christian inspirational message to encourage attendees. Helen has raised the bar on community outreach through Balance Builders. She has volunteered her time and incredible talents and has made great sacrifices in other areas of volunteering in church life. She is a chef extraordinaire and has catered for many church events, she has served on church council for many years, led and participated in worship and handled many other areas of volunteering with absolute dedication and passion.

As testament to the difference Helen has made to the community, she also received the Brisbane Lord Mayor Australian Day Achievement Award in 2023.
