Social Impact Report - ESG: A language for the difference we make

21 September 2026

The recently launched Social Impact Report has helped many congregations see something they have known for years: local churches make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of their communities.  What the report also highlights are that there is a growing language being used by governments, community organisations, and funders to describe that contribution.

One of those terms is ESG, which stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. The Social Impact Report primarily reflects the social dimension of ESG, helping make visible the ways congregations build belonging, reduce isolation, provide practical support, and create trusted relationships within their communities.

While the term may sound unfamiliar, the work behind it is not. Every time a congregation welcomes people into its spaces, provides practical assistance, supports someone through a difficult season, or helps connect people to wider services, it is contributing to community wellbeing. These are the kinds of contributions the Social Impact Report has helped bring into focus.

ESG matters because it provides a language that many external organisations already understand. Governments, community organisations, and funders increasingly look for evidence of social value when considering partnerships, support and investment. The Social Impact Report gives congregations a stronger foundation for those conversations by helping articulate the difference they are already making.

Importantly, this is not about changing who we are or reshaping ministry to fit a trend. It is about recognising the value of what congregations are already contributing to their communities and having language that helps describe that contribution to others.

The report does not claim that congregations solve every challenge facing their communities. Rather, it helps churches describe what they do, who they connect with and what they can genuinely evidence. As the report highlights, social value becomes visible when impact is understood and communicated clearly and responsibly.

The opportunity for congregations is not to become experts in ESG. The Social Impact Report invites us to pause, recognise that contribution and take pride in the role congregations continue to play across Queensland. Sharing these stories is not about promotion. It is about recognising and celebrating the relationships, belonging and community that are created through local ministry every day.

It is a reminder that the work of congregations matters, and that the contribution being made in communities across Queensland is worthy of recognition and pride.
