Moderator’s Community Service Medal 2025 - Muriel Wroe

The Uniting Church in Australia Queensland Synod Moderator’s Community Service Medal is awarded for outstanding contribution to the community.

For fifteen years, Muriel Wroe has been a dedicated and compassionate volunteer at St Stephen’s Hospital in Hervey Bay, offering unwavering support to patients, visitors, and staff. Since first responding to a call for volunteers in the Fraser Coast Chronicle, Muriel has contributed more than 2,700 hours of service and has touched the lives of more than 30,000 patients through her warmth, kindness, and steady presence.

Muriel is known for her willingness to take on any task that supports the wellbeing and comfort of others. Her roles have included providing a complimentary transport service for patients requiring essential medical treatment, offering support and conversation to those in hospital, guiding visitors throughout the facility, and assisting with practical duties—including kitchen support and wayfinding—wherever needed. Her reliability and compassionate nature have made her an invaluable part of the St Stephen’s community.

Inspired by her own experience caring for her mother during a long hospital stay, Muriel brings deep empathy to her volunteer work. Her service has enriched not only the lives of those she assists but her own, reflecting a profound personal commitment to giving back to her community.

Muriel is also a motivator and connector, encouraging friends and acquaintances to join the volunteer team—strengthening a culture of kindness and generosity that benefits the entire Wide Bay region.

With over 500 individuals directly supported through her work and countless more impacted by her compassion, dedication, and practical support, Muriel Wroe stands as an outstanding example of service to others. Her generosity of spirit and steadfast commitment continue to make a meaningful difference every day.
