Celebrating the Heart of Early Learning: Inspire, Influence, Impact

8 December 2025

by Joey Le-Morrison, UEL - Marketing Team

The Uniting Early Learning leadership team gathered at the picturesque Tamborine Mountain Glades for the annual UEL Conference – Inspire, Influence, Impact. Over three days, leaders and educators engaged in professional development, team building, and meaningful conversations focused on shaping a better future for children and families.

A highlight of the conference was the inaugural UEL Awards Gala Dinner—an inspiring evening dedicated to recognising the outstanding individuals and teams who bring the organisation’s mission to life every day. More than an awards ceremony, the Gala was a celebration of heart, commitment, and shared purpose.

On that warm evening, laughter and stories filled the air as the Uniting Early Learning community gathered—not simply to present awards, but to honour the heart and soul of early learning: people. People who show up every day with patience, creativity, and love, shaping futures one small moment at a time.

The Uniting Early Learning Awards represent more than recognition. They express gratitude—to the educators who kneel down to listen, the leaders who dream big for their teams, and the services that make families feel like they have found a second home.

Meet Our Award Winners:

Rising Star of the Year – Belinda Gray (Aspley Service)
Belinda’s passion for Auslan education shines through everything she does. With over 22 years of experience across industries, she has brought creativity and innovation to early learning.

"Being named Rising Star fills me with immense pride and a huge smile. I feel so valued and lucky to work alongside such an amazing team. This year has been the most incredible of my life, and I can't wait to keep moving forward—achieving even more with my team and making a real impact for the Auslan program with children and the community."

Belinda’s approach integrates Auslan into daily routines through interactive storytelling, songs, and games, fostering inclusion and deeper thinking. Her advice? “Start early, make it fun, and always prioritise eye contact and engagement.”

Peer Choice Award – Renia Metcalf (Gympie Service)

Renia was celebrated for her unwavering positivity and team spirit, creating an inclusive environment where collaboration thrives. Her peers describe her as the heartbeat of the team—always encouraging, always supportive.

Educator of the Year – Erin Walker (Illoura Service)

For Erin, teaching is about those magical moments when learning clicks.
"The most rewarding part is watching those little moments of achievement… when something finally ‘clicks’ and you see the pride on their faces."

She recalls a child struggling to climb a slide:
"I encouraged her by saying, ‘You can do it, you can do hard things.’ When she finally reached the top, she turned to me beaming, saying, ‘I did it, Erin! I can do hard things!’ Moments like that are exactly why I love teaching."

Her advice to educators? “Never lose sight of children being the centre of your practice. Keep learning, reflect often, and value collaboration—your team and the children are everything.”

Synod Leadership Team Member – Michelle Keech (Area Manager)

Michelle sees leadership as planting seeds of possibility and nurturing growth.
"Receiving recognition affirmed that the work I do every day is having a meaningful impact—not only within my team but across the wider UEL community."

Her proudest moments? Watching emerging leaders grow in confidence and capability.
"Leadership is not about perfection—it’s about learning through experience, including making mistakes. Be courageous and seek out mentors who inspire you."

Service Leader of the Year – Madonna Offord (Illoura Service)
Madonna leads with heart and hands-on commitment.
"Leadership to me is all about working with the team so we are all on the same page. Listening to ideas and incorporating them into our environment."
Her vision? “To continue offering the best care we can to the families who trust us every day.”

Service of the Year – Illoura
This award celebrates a team whose heart and dedication make every family feel truly at home.
"At Illoura, we welcome families and children as part of our own. We see the children as ours and the families as one of us," says Madonna, Illoura's Centre Director.

Collaboration and innovation drive Illoura’s success, with regular team meetings, strong community connections, and a shared commitment to excellence at every level.

Why This Matters
More than achievement—they honour the heart behind the work. Every educator recognised is shaping futures through care, creativity, and faith.

The Gala evening was filled with hugs, laughter, and stories that reminded everyone why this work matters. From sustainability projects to inclusive practices, Uniting Early Learning educators are leading the way in creating spaces where every child feels seen and every family feels welcome.

General Manager Belinda Briggs reflected:
"Every moment of the Gala reflected our commitment to building a better future together. These awards aren’t just about achievement—they’re about honouring the heart behind the work."

To our winners and finalists—thank you. You remind us that early learning is not just education; it’s love in action.
Here’s to continuing the journey of collaboration, innovation, and care for the communities we serve.
