Trinity Candidate Retreat
16 July 2026
By Sheree Bugden, Trinity Candidate, Townsville
The whole room erupted in laughter as a candidate, whose identity will remain a secret, demonstrated their inept, but hilarious magical ability. I remembered that old adage; people who laugh together, stay together.
The 2026 Queensland Uniting Church Candidate’s retreat was a remarkable experience, filled with enriching moments and connections, in a beautiful setting, (even if it was a bit chilly for my North Queensland blood!) The three-minute testimonies were a delightful way to begin and learn new secrets about one other.
One of the standout aspects was undoubtedly the food, which was exceptional. Retiring principal Scott Dowman donned the apron for one last act of servant leadership, giving us a taste of his time in Thailand. Special thanks to Scott for accommodating various dietary needs and fostering a sense of community as we shared meals and conversations around the table.
Having our other lecturers present as speakers during our discipleship sessions added depth to our discussions and learning, and the Haiku Bible Study inspired me to incorporate this discipline into my daily routine.
The Talent night, though initially a source of anxiety for me, became a highlight of the retreat. It provided a wonderful opportunity for everyone to relax and express themselves, creating a balance of silliness and seriousness that brought us closer together. From juggling and mentalism, to spoken word and song, as Victor Borge reminds us, ‘Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.’
The relaxed schedule was another highlight, allowing ample time for breathing, talking, and even sitting by the fire. Meeting everyone in person reinforced the comfort fostered through Trinity’s formation program; it proved that rapport and connection can be built even through Zoom, but face-to-face interactions are essential to deepen those bonds.
I appreciated Jesse Caulfield’s presence, especially since he didn’t have to attend having recently completed his Phase 2 formation requirements. Jesse wanted to come and meet some of us for the first time in person. Travelling with a group of people chasing the call of God on their lives, is something we may never have again.
Overall, the retreat was a profound experience, despite missing my own bed. It was a time of growth, connection, and learning that I will cherish.
