Clean Up Australia - CKCC
26 March 2026
By Warren King, Property & WH&S Officer- CKCC
On the 1st March 2026 the congregation at Chermside Kedron Community Church (CKCC) undertook to clean up around the church and surrounding streets. The event was advertised in the wider community, and 20 people from the congregation took part. Starting at 10.30am after the Sunday service made it hot going for the participants. After 90 minutes of collecting, a BBQ was held at noon with a free sausage sizzle for all the volunteers.
The 20 people formed teams of two or four, and the resulting seven teams were given predefined areas with maps to follow. For the less able, a smaller area was available in and around the immediate church grounds and for the good walkers areas up to and around Burnie Bray Park, Bradbury Park and Prince Charles Hospital were available - an area of 0.6 square Kilometres covering the North , north west, north east and south of the church.
Participants were given bags and gloves provided by Clean up Australia, a map of their area, a plastic bag for any vapes, and little red flags to mark the location of syringes to be collected later by people with the proper PPE.
Nine bags of rubbish were collected - surprisingly no vapes or syringes (Yay!). Some of the oddities found during the clean-up were a toothpaste and toothbrush, a freezer brick and a collection of dead pens.
All in all a good morning's work, and Australia is a little bit cleaner!
