Wrapped in Care: Eco-friendly gifts for a joyful Christmas
2 December 2025
Christmas is a season of giving, but it’s also a wonderful time to reflect on how our choices impact God’s creation. We are called to be good stewards of the earth, even in the way we celebrate. By choosing gifts that are thoughtful, sustainable, and kind to the planet, we can share joy while honouring our commitment to caring for Country and all of Creation.
Here are some eco-friendly ideas for your Christmas gifts:
- Upcycled and second-hand treasures
Beautiful gifts don’t have to be brand new. Make like the Misson and Ministry team at the Synod office, who shopped for a $10 secret Santa gift at their local Lifeline, and even wore op shopped Christmas attire for the occasion! Check out your local Uniting Church op shop for homewares, pre-loved books, toys, games, clothes and more! - Experiences over things
Give the gift of quality time – concert tickets, a family picnic, or a cooking class. Experiences reduce waste and most importantly, create lasting memories. - Shop local
If you are going to buy something new, consider supporting local artisans and First Nations businesses. It always feels good to see dollars going straight back into your local community or supporting First Nations’ self-determination, rather than a large multinational department store. Here is a great place to start: Welcome to Country Online Shop [https://www.welcometocountry.com/]. - Handmade
Why not try your hand at making something yourself? Things like homemade jams, knitted scarves, art, or baked goods carry a personal touch and are infinitely more ethical than something cheaply made overseas. - Gifts for a cause
Consider donating to a cause in someone’s name. Many organisations offer gift cards for clean water projects, tree planting, or community support programs.
Hint: Uniting World’s “Everything in Common” gift catalogue is now available here! https://donate.unitingworld.org.au/everythingincommon
Bonus wrapping tip: Use recycled paper, fabric wraps, op-shopped scarves, old maps or botanical books for a creative and sustainable touch.
