Mission as a member of the UnitingCare Board
9 December 2024
UnitingCare Queensland’s Board Chair, Jim Demack, gives an insight into how the UnitingCare Board helps fulfil the Church’s mission.
When Jim Demack joined the UnitingCare Queensland Board in 2021, he knew he would be playing an important part in ensuring the organisation continues to flourish and deliver on its mission of giving life in all its fullness to all those who encounter UnitingCare’s services.
The Board’s governance role includes strategic planning and thinking, and oversight of all the services provided throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory.
UnitingCare’s Board plays an important enabling role in ensuring that the organisation’s resources are used effectively - particularly in providing help to those who are most vulnerable at any time during their journey. The Board role is driven by the purpose of the organisation, which makes a tangible difference to people’s lives whenever they have the need for UnitingCare’s services.
In the last 12 months, the Board has been involved in a myriad of innovative projects, including the development of a new day surgery unit at one of UnitingCare’s four hospitals, which will ensure patients receive the finest medical care without the lengthy wait times.
The opportunity to visit Lifeline’s Geebung warehouse was another special experience which provided the Board with valuable insight. “We were able to talk to staff and volunteers who sort and distribute donated goods,” Jim said.
“Their stories of innovation and dedication reminded us of the focus which comes when working for a ‘for purpose’ organisation,” he added. “The visit provided insight into the everyday challenges and successes of the people who devote their working lives to UnitingCare Queensland. Their dedication was inspiring and centred on doing whatever they could to help the people served by UnitingCare.”
The Board helps to guide initiatives that provide essential support, from mental health services to community outreach programs.
“Board members get great satisfaction from seeing and hearing about the experiences of those who benefit from the services and knowing that their contributions can help create a positive outcome for those served by UnitingCare Queensland,” Jim said.
For those interested in serving on the Board at UnitingCare Queensland, he says “it's about making a real difference to people’s lives and being part of a community of staff and volunteers who are dedicated to the service of others.”
UnitingCare Queensland has two vacancies for experienced non-executive directors with strong business acumen, including sector experience, property experience, and/or experience with strategic execution and innovation. Current active members of the Uniting Church in Australia are strongly encouraged to apply.
