CARE Matters Course

Volunteers CARE Matters courses are offered any time a pastoral carer starts volunteering in various Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod chaplaincy settings. Chaplaincy partners are UnitingCare Queensland hospitals, Blue Care residential aged care homes, Wesley Mission Queensland residential aged care, and Uniting Church Public Hospital Chaplaincy in Queensland.

You will receive one-on-one chaplaincy training and mentoring where you will learn from professional specialist chaplains.

Volunteers CARE Matters is a five-stage orientation, induction and training program designed to train, equip and mentor pastoral care volunteers.

By the end of this session you will be able to complete your organisation’s orientation program and to complete all requirements of a volunteer with your organisation.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Have been inducted into your particular physical context.
  • Meet others working in your setting and have had a walk-around of your site.
  • Have completed any expectations of your supervisor/mentor for that site.

This third session will cover:

  • What is a mentor?
  • Why do I have to have a mentor?
  • Working with your mentor: The mentoring conversation
  • The role of the mentor: Limits and opportunities

By the end of this session you will have a basic idea of what mentoring entails, why it is essential to your pastoral care and how you can build, develop and nurture that relationship.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Be refreshed and extended in pastoral care subjects relevant to your context.
  • Revise, expand on and practise pastoral skills related to your particular settings.
  • Be reminded of processes for referral and follow-up, reporting to our mentors, debriefing and releasing pastoral encounters.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Feel more confident in undertaking a supervised pastoral visit in a hospital or care facility.
  • Understand how and what you can record of visitation.

Pre-requisites
