Celebrating Genuine Love: BlueCare Anniversary Reflection

August marks a significant milestone for BlueCare as we celebrate another anniversary, and this year our BlueCare Sunday theme is ‘Genuine Love’. This theme, chosen by the UCA Qld Synod, calls us to reflect on the heart of our community and faith. On Sunday 23rd August, West End Uniting Church will host the BlueCare Sunday service - a gathering dedicated to honouring the spirit and legacy of BlueCare’s community service. This legacy is rooted in the dedicated service of remarkable individuals. Olive Crombie, the first Blue Nurse from West End Uniting Church, and Frank Godfrey, the first accountant for Blue Nurses and member of West End Uniting Church, remain inspiring examples of how genuine love and commitment can profoundly shape lives and communities. On the surface, love might seem like a simple sentiment, but in the context of BlueCare’s work and the broader Uniting Church community, genuine love is a commitment that goes beyond words. It is a daily act lived out in the halls of aged care facilities, in home visits, and in the quiet moments when someone feels heard and valued.

Genuine love is more than a fleeting feeling or a kind gesture; it is the foundation of the relationships we nurture with those in our care. Each staff member, volunteer, and supporter brings something unique, but what unites us is a dedication to showing real, sincere love - love that is patient, compassionate, and honouring of the dignity of every person. It is the sort of love that doesn’t seek reward or recognition, but simply aims to make life brighter and more meaningful for others.

Reflecting on BlueCare’s journey, I am reminded of the countless moments where genuine love has made a difference. Whether it’s the comfort of a warm meal, a reassuring conversation, or the gentle presence beside someone in their time of need, these actions are the heartbeat of our service. In a world that sometimes feels rushed and transactional, the authentic love we offer at BlueCare stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we honour one another above ourselves.

The lectionary reading, Romans 12:9-10 (Love must be sincere – Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.) reminds us that love must be sincere - never forced or superficial. Genuine love calls us to turn away from what is harmful and cling to what is good, even when it isn’t easy. This is the challenge and the gift of our BlueCare community: to be devoted to one another in love, to offer support, encouragement, and kindness, and to foster an environment where every person feels valued.

As we approach this anniversary, let us celebrate the legacy of genuine love that has shaped BlueCare and the lives it touches. Let us also recommit ourselves to embodying this love in all we do - not just in August, but every day. May we continue to build a community where love is sincere, devotion is steadfast, and every action brings hope and comfort to those who need it most.
