Baptism Records
The Uniting Church Queensland Synod Office does not hold any central repository of baptism records.
For baptisms that took place prior to 1977 (when the Uniting Church was formed), the John Oxley Library, part of the State Library, holds some historic records from the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches prior to Union.
Where can I find my record?
Uniting Church Baptismal records are held by the congregation in which the baptism takes place. The congregation, if known and still operating, may be able to provide a copy of the requested Baptism record, and your first enquiry is best directed there. Contact details for Uniting Church congregations in Queensland are available under “Your Local Church”.
What if the congregation no longer exists?
Over time, some congregations have closed, renamed or amalgamated and we cannot guarantee the safe preservation of records from individual congregations. If you are unable to find or contact the congregation where the baptism took place, the Presbytery (geographic region) may be able to assist. Presbytery office contact details can be found under the “Presbyteries” tab on our “Contact Us” page. It may also be beneficial to search the surrounding suburb or area of the original congregation as there may be another congregation that holds records.
Presbyterian churches
It is worth noting that some Presbyterian congregations did not participate in Union in 1977 and become Uniting Church congregations. These congregations may still be in operation and can be contacted separately.
