Uniting Church is not rebranding

It was incorrectly reported in the Daily Telegraph today and then across numerous media outlets, including Channel Nine’s Today program, that the church was rebranding to “Uniting”. The Uniting Church in Australia is not rebranding. A year ago, UnitingCare in NSW and the ACT rebranded to “Uniting” and journalists have confused this one part of the church as the whole church.

Assembly president Stuart McMillan says in this official statement that the suggestion that Uniting’s rebrand was “a desperate bid to distance itself from child sex abuse scandals” is “completely false and despicable”.

Stuart also defended the Christian underpinning of the Church’s agencies. “The explicit Christian commitment to people in the care of Uniting Church agencies remains the same as it has for the last 40 years,” he says in his statement.

Uniting Church NSW/ACT moderator Rev Myung Hwa Park has also responded and Uniting, the Synod of NSW/ACT and the Assembly are working together to respond to this inaccurate reporting.

Uniting Church community service activities are an integral part of our participation in the mission of God in the world, and will remain so.
