Launch Event: Discipleship

The point of church union was renewal in faith and mission, that is, renewal in Christian discipleship. The Basis of Union was intentionally written to resource that renewal in an ongoing way, generation by generation. Andrew Dutney will share the story of how that was done and how the Basis continues to call us to discipleship. This event will showcase not only the launch of Inspired Disciples 2018, but additionally, the Discipleship Framework presented by Moderator, Dave Baker.

Session: Uniting World 1 – Reimagining Global Discipleship; A new way to partner

Uniting World works for a world where lives are whole and hopeful, free from poverty and injustice. In this session Ali Cooke takes a post-colonial theological frame to deconstruct the way we approach global partnerships. In establishing a new mutual context for partnership, disciples can explore how we relate to, learn from and receive from each other, being mindful of how issues of power, wealth and representation can distort equality and reciprocity in meaningful cross cultural partnerships.

Transactional based fundraising programs sweep the giver into a co-dependent and condescending understanding that sharing our affluence will better ‘the other’ in a redeeming way that overcomes injustice and poverty. A more integrated understanding of partnership seeks to explore what it means to be a good disciple, where meaningful intercultural partnership helps to shape the values of both communities.

A committed global partnership is not only more efficient (as evidenced by fundraising cost ratios) it empowers both communities as recipients engage in an interdependent space of learning from the other. Join Ali to explore what it means not only to be a global citizen, but a global disciple.

Session: Uniting World 2 -Reimagining Global Discipleship; A new way to give

Uniting World works for a world where lives are whole and hopeful, free from poverty and injustice. In this session Ali Cooke considers generosity as discipleship. We take a look at the Christian leaders role in cultivating generous ministry partners in their congregations and we explore the socioeconomic trends that influence giving to church and ministry.

The giving of our time, resources and prayer to empower the work of the Church locally, nationally and internationally, is an expression of our faith. Yet too often teaching on giving, stewardship and investing in ministry here and overseas are avoided. This session explores intentional, reciprocal partnerships where the giver and receiver are both transformed by a partnership of interdependence. We look at the why, when and how to give – ways to avoid being manipulated by sophisticated fundraising techniques and to encourage your congregation to connect intentionally with the purpose of missional partnership.
