Event Details

For the first time, Queensland Churches Environmental Network (QCEN) will be holding a special outdoor service at Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, to celebrate Season of Creation

Season of Creation is observed by Christians each year throughout the world from 1st September (World Environment Day) to 4th October (the feast day of St Francis of Assisi). It is an opportunity to appreciate and thank God for Creation and lament about the damage we are doing to both flora and fauna.

The theme for Season of Creation in 2023 is “Let Justice and Peace flow”, with an emphasis on calling for justice not only for humans but for all of creation. The theme also recognises that at a global level richer, more powerful countries have a duty to deal justly and honestly with those communities suffering the most from the effects of climate change.

QCEN marks the season by seeking submissions of artworks to be displayed at St John’s cathedral and by getting together for an ecumenical prayer service. Past services have been held at St John’s Cathedral, St Stephen’s cathedral and Ann Street Uniting Church. This year we will be gathering at Mt Coot-tha Botanical gardens at the Lychee Tree Lawn, a short walk from the garden’s visitor centre. After the service, you can join us in a contemplative walk around the gardens.

There couldn’t be a nice spot to appreciate creation than the Botanic Gardens!
